Why Buy the Apple TV – The Internet TV Player

Why get the Apple TV?

Apple TV picture topThe Apple TV internet TV connection device will change the way we watch TV.
Apple TV streams Video to your TV from your computer and uses digital HDMI cable to connect to your TV.  I see a Apple revolution going on with the constant stream of cool high technology products that revolutionizes the way we do things.

Take me for example.  I worked for Hewlett Packard Company for over 20 years.  I managed Intel Processors, Chipsets, Boards, components, packaging and DRAMS (memory chips for computers) and R&D to bring out the latest and greatest new HP Product.  I would never buy an Apple product when I worked there.  I use HP laptops, HP Officejet printer, HP high definition monitor and use the HP 12C calculator.

So what happened?
iPhones came out with the latest and greatest possible device capabilities of any other mobile phone.  I decided to get one right when they came out for $400 for my business.  I loved it.  I use it for Twitter, Facebook, Google Maps, TV guide, remote control, camera and flashlight.  It is totally awesome.  I used it for many years and just got the iPhone 4 and it is so much better.

Then I had virus protection that was slowing down my computer and I wanted to start making videos.  The Mac has iMovie with every computer and it is a great video editor.  I bought my first Macbook in 2008.

Buy Apple iPad 16GBBuy the iPad tablet computer device
Then the iPad came out and it looked like a great way to read books and watch movies and get email and run social networks.  I bought a iPad for my birthday because I wanted something I did not need.  I love it now and use it all the time.

I got fed up with my windows computer crashing all the time so I decided to switch my primary computer to a Mac in December 25, 2009.  I love it.  The build quality is great.  It does not crash as much and after getting used to it can pretty much do everything I did on my Windows machine.  I prefer Windows file management system.  It is a lot easier for me to find what I am looking for.   The Macbook Pro is a delight to use and is sturdy and is a wonderful laptop that I like better than Windows laptops.

Buy a Airport extreme wireless router
My old Linksys WRT-54G router was dropping the internet connection on wired and wireless connections and it was very frustrating.  I searched for a new router and decided on the Apple Airport Extreme dual band N router.  There was a close second with the D-Link router, yet I went with Apple because I like their products.  They feel substantial and well built and the technology does not seem to go obsolete very fast.  I brought it home plugged it in and that was about it.  No muss no fuss, it just started to work without any fancy set up or reading the instructions or anything like that. Apple tends to be a very customer service friendly company while carefully watching the bottom line.

Apple is the best run company in the world.
The best just got better.
Apple is leading the charge of implementing new useful technology for the masses.
Apple is setting the standard and raising the bar for other slower less innovative companies to integrate into this new standard set by Apple.  The are becoming a huge force in advertising with the iPad.  So much so that the publishers are not very happy with the way Apple is managing the information the advertisers get since it is less that they are used to.  The publishers are used to getting all the demographic information for the people that took action because of an advertisement they ran in a magazine.  Apple is renting the TV shows for a day or two for 99 cents.  At Amazon, you can buy the TV show forever for the same 99 cents.

For me, I am getting tired of paying high prices to the Cable company every month.  I get HD digital signals from a TV antenna on my roof so I get the regular 1, 4, 5, 7, 11 as well as local channels.  I can watch most TV shows online either with the iPad and the ABC application player and tv.com application.  Hulu.com has most major TV shows available to watch for free the next day.  Training for just about anything is available on YouTube for free.  It will be very useful and cool to be able to stream video from my computer wirelessly instead of unhooking the DVD player HDMI cable and connecting it to my laptop.  I think for $99 that the Apple TV is a perfect thing to buy to keep up with technology.

My Apple TV review based on the technology results in a Buy rating.

Um, so just cancel your cable then. You don’t need cable if you get the OTA signals. If you want timeshifting, you can pick up a Tivo Series3 + lifetime service. It has a coax in so you can record straight off your antenna. Voila–no cable. And no real need for an Apple TV either.

Great point Erica. People have a difficult time to let go of something they have or want. (this is why advertising works by creating the inner desire to own the “thing”) Time for me to do a test run and see if streaming shows like Project Runway that are not broadcast over the air from the laptop to the TV works well enough to save the cable expense. I do not need an Apple TV. I really did not need an iPad either. I have just always been an early adopter of new technology and enjoy writing about it.

Right now, I’ve got a Mini with Plex as my HTPC. It usually works pretty well, but it’s also a waste of a perfectly good and not inexpensive Mac.

While having access to Hulu and whatnot would be nice, I find that I just don’t watch that much TV anymore. In fact I use the Mini for playing music with the TV off about 95% of the time.

So for me, the Apple TV is perfect. I can stream Netflix, YouTube and movies from my hard drive to the TV, and I can still stream iTunes to my stereo. For only $99 bucks.

Plus, it allows me to turn my Mac into a desktop and finally ditch my crappy Vista laptop.

      Totally agree Josefina,
I tried to upgrade my Vista laptop to Windows 7 and it still crashes.
I like the idea of hooking it up to my stereo to stream music. Once I had a big home theater set up and now I have a old tube receiver with a record payer hooked up to it LOL.
You have got my interest up and will hook up the Apple TV to a stereo for streaming music seamlessly from iTunes to the higher quality sound of a real stereo.

    • Clay Franklin October 14, 2010, 1:00 am

I agree Josefina, I thought about using a Mac Mini for the home theater and you Tube and Hulu, yet the Apple TV is so inexpensive it just makes more sense for my needs right now.

the new format Apple TV sounds like it finally has some of the functions we all wanted from the original product. The new price makes it really appealing too.

    • Clay Franklin September 15, 2010, 8:18 pm

I agree. Between the feature set, ease of use, Apple’s great product reputation and especially the low price is what sold me.
I also wanted to order the day it came out since for the iPhone and iPad the delivery was pushed out the longer people waited to order.

  • Squiggly September 8, 2010, 2:00 pm

The price is good and it actually has some valuable features. Its this or the google one

    • Clay Franklin September 15, 2010, 8:16 pm

Good point, I should build a comparison chart on the next post after I use the Apple TV a while.

  • Jennifer Quinn September 10, 2010, 10:20 pm

Hey! Cool! I just bought the AirPort Express. The geek squad guy at Best Buy recommended it. Plus. It has cool packaging. :-)

Glad to hear an exper such as you gives it the stamp of approval.

    • Clay Franklin September 15, 2010, 7:57 pm

Hey Jennifer, Thank you for stopping by. I’ve really been enjoying chatting on Twitter.
I really like the Airport Routers because they are so easy to use, have good distance and almost never drop the connection. I was getting dropped connection even on hard wired connections on the old Linksys so it was time to upgrade. I just plugged in the Airport router and it worked.

    • Clay Franklin October 14, 2010, 12:43 am

Jenny, I love the ease of use of the Apple Airport routers. It is plug and play and is providing much better distance and reliability than my older Linksys. Thank you for taking the time to comment and congratulations on your new router.

I too am getting tired of the virtual monopoly that a cable company has. H— they don’t even give a discount to seniors. Guess I should have used the discount cards for a converter box.

    Well look into Apple TV

    • Clay Franklin September 15, 2010, 8:12 pm

      Hey Robert,
      Nice to see you here.
I totally agree that I am tired of paying for TV service especially since a roof antenna will get all the local channels in HD in most cities.
We watch Bravo HD, Lifetime HD, HGTV HD Sharks Hockey games and A&E HD a lot so I am checking around for the availability of these shows on line before canceling DirectTV.

    • Clay Franklin October 14, 2010, 12:41 am

Hey Robert, nice to see you here on my site. Many locations get Digital HD signals OTA with a roof antenna for free. No USA or Lifetime, yet all the regular channels are for free in most locations. Let me know if you would like a link to how to determine what channels you get for your location.

  • Techcraft September 15, 2010, 7:28 pm

Thank you. This is a great information, The price is good and it actually has some valuable features.

    • Clay Franklin September 15, 2010, 8:07 pm

I think it will be a great addition for the home TV because You Tube has lot’s of great videos on every topic. I also subscribe to podcast videos relating to Internet marketing and they all go into iTunes automatically. I have been watching them on the iPad and iPhone so watching on the TV will be really cool.
It would be nice if it supported Hulu.com videos yet I can always just stream those from the laptop on a HDMI cable.
Once I get the Apple TV and hook it up, I will have more information to share here on how it works and just how awesome it is.

I absolutely love APPLE products. Apple is one of the most innovative companies in the world. I recently just purchased an Ipad and it is incredible, it was a great purchase!!

Satellite TV players perform this task better through automation, without going to any TV/VOD websites, than any other gateway to Internet media. These type of players include directories such as “Category” and “Country” that contain many channels for easy access to media in a matter of seconds.

  • Jimmy Fletcher January 3, 2011, 11:41 pm

Nice one! Another innovative invention of apple. The Apple TV has cool features and the price is right. Now we can enjoy movies without worrying for the cable bill. Indeed, Apple is the best run company in the world. :)

  • Xian Fukiri January 4, 2011, 4:42 pm

I have no doubts for the standard and quality of apple products. Through the years I’ve been enjoying there iphone, ipod and among many others. I’m glad there is new invention in the market. Good! You have included this in your posts. Have a Prosperous and Blissful New Year! :)

  • Sam January 21, 2011, 11:37 am

Did you see today that on Yahoo! there was an article, practically about the same thing? I guess a family cut their 90 dollar cable costs the same way- using an antennae, Hulu and other sites to make up for the rest. The only thing they didn’t get was the HD channels for local stations, but I guess they didn’t read your blog :)

  • mmakemoneyfast11 January 28, 2011, 12:51 am

That’s a cool Apple TV Clay! So this what your blog is all about. Not just internet marketing but also for techie things. I like it as I have interest in gadgets. Great stuffs you mentioned above. Keep me updated.

  • Neill@TV without cable September 26, 2011, 8:56 pm

I’m the ultimate cheapskate. I pulled the plug on the cable company last year because I came to the conclusion that it was a complete waste of money. I’m saving $80/month. Didn’t want to miss out on TV completely so I made an antenna. It works great!

    • Clay Franklin October 29, 2011, 12:59 am

I almost pulled the plug but with my wife wants to watch Project Runway and the San Jose Shark Games,

I did install the exact same antenna you have on your home page of your site. The HDTV antenna works fantastic for all my local stations. The antenna only costs about the same as month of cable.
