I would guess that social proof becomes very powerful in the future.
I suspect our phones will tell us what everyone else in the store is buying and we can scan a qr code and get recommendations from our friends.
But back to link building, a press release or a link from Mashable or the Wall street Journal in body text will have huge authority for a long time.
As you say social proof may become more important in the future.
If I linked to your new blog with a keyword anchor text, it would provide a bit of a vote of confidence by my site and my reputation as Clay Franklin that it is a worthy destination for whoever searches for the anchor text used on the link.

This blurs the distinction between a link and a social proof.

Thank you for writing this list. It has helped give me better perspective on building links. I didn’t realise that building links equated to building reputation and then this helps with rankings in Google. Is link building going to be as effective in the future i wonder. Is link building going to be more or less effective than social proof in the future.

In my opinion, making your site trustworthy and reliable, building high quality backlinks are the most efficient way to increase page rank. Build outbound links from your website to authority sites like Wikipedia. Just make sure that you are linking to post that is relevant to your niche/keyword. It tells Google that your are also contributing or supplying more information.

great tips – I found the best way to up your pagerank is to get links from other sites with high pagerank, do-follow links that is, and I have found that the time it takes your webpage to load is one of the factors of it too :)

Great list. I have found the most success by simply commenting on good blogs. Even though financial consulting has nothing to do with blogging, I tend to follow and comment on much more blogging websites because I actually learn a ton of information.

In the beginning I read that commenting on blogs was good to do, and that was about the extent of my SEO knowledge. I quickly learned that a great side benefit was that when I would look for sites to comment on, I would read and learn many different techniques to promote and share my services.
