How to Increase Web Site Page Rank

by Clay Franklin on July 22, 2009

Here is a simple process to to follow to Increase your Web Site Page Rank

1. Do keyword research for your keyword you are targeting and find keywords that have the highest commercial index (CPI)
2. Research sites that have related content and a high page rank and list them to add links.
     a. Comment on the targeted forums with link in signature on forums
     b. Comment on the targeted blogs using link with useful information to be seen as an authority.
     c. Set up a twitter account with the domain name or keyword
     d. Add a link on your facebook profile to the site.
     e. Set up a facebook fan page with keywords and link to site and good content.
3. Add no follow to my outgoing links like this <a href=”http://feeds.feedburner.com/courtneytuttle” rel=”nofollow”>RSS Feed</a>
4. Add video to the site – google loves videos
5. Add pictures to the site
6. Post often so the content is fresh
7. Limit keywords used and tags so site appears as a expert for specific keywords
8. Post articles to other sites like ezine articles with links back to the site.
a. Mix up the articles and change the titles so they are not exactly the same and post them to other article sites.
9. Look for opportunities to get a link to your site on an authority site like .edu and .gov
10. Distribute your videos to as many video sites as possible with hyper links back to a specific page on your site
11. Answer questions on yahoo answers relating to your keywords and add a link to the site.
12. Answer questions on linked in relating to your keywords and add a link to the site.
13. Submit a press release relating about the site and include a link.
14. Submit domain to the yahoo directory

There are many more ways to increase page rank and a treasure check of tools to use. I will be discussing them in a future post or sending them out to my subscribers.

Thank you Gail,
You have inspired me to write another post about page rank. I set up a autoresponder series (and continue to add to it) that has additional SEO, page rank and Using Social Media to drive traffic to your web site and other internet marketing and social media tips. (email sign up box for this series)
Thank you again. I am a perpetual student at my local college taking SEO, web analytics, Blogs, SQL server, internet marketing and all the digital media classes online.
If I have not already, I will be installing a do follow plug in for this blog so each commenter will get a little link juice.

I only know how to increase alexa rank. My PR is still low. Only a PR 2 site, but my blog traffic is good enought to keep me motivated to write new post regularly. I already knew these great tips, but didn’t really implement them. I should take action now ;) thank you for the reminder!

Clay, very useful no-nonsense or fillers post.

Question though: why do you promote “no-follow” tag? There are obviously pros and cons to it. Pros: it encourages more comments, cons: it can potentially leak the juice from your page. What are your reasons?

BTW, Wordpress automatically uses “nofollow” tags.

Hi Ana, Thanks for stopping by.
Page Rank is a good topic for discussion.
I like to use no follow tags on advertisements and links to resources included in blog posts that I do not want to pass page rank to. Google does follow no follow tags, it is just that we are telling google not to pass page rang to the link.
The “nofollow” actually means “don’t pass PageRank” to the page this link references yet it does not always work like that according to Jerry West. I also like to add no follow tags to the About, Contact Us, Privacy Statement, Terms of Use, pages, and I learned this from Jerry West.
Another interesting topic to discuss is site maps. Guess it is time to write up an article on site maps for SEO.

I still think that people pay to much attention to their PR of their site. I think, but not sure, Google only updates the PR, the one we see on the tool bar, every six monthes or something.

I do have a question about ranking though. In my webmaster tools, it says I am rank 6 for a keyword I am trying to rank for, but when I do an actual search, I am ranked like 20.

Does anyone know why the difference?

Great blog by the way, lots of useful information here to read.

Great idea about leveraging Yahoo answers! This is something I’d never thought of but I’m sure it would have lots of good effects for the website. Yahoo probably gives you extra credit in their search engine if you appear often in Yahoo answers as well…

In addition to considering the number of links to your page and the ranking of the linking page, to compute a page’s PageRank, Google considers hundreds of factors including

how fast a site is gaining links
how long the links persist
when your site acquired the links
the click through rate (CTR) of Google’s search results, cached pages, favorites on the Google Toolbar
the stickiness of your site (i.e., the effectiveness of your site in retaining individual users)

Thank you for a great list!!

You may think why your site which dont buy/sell links also gettin This is actually not really your fault. Your site might probably received lots of PR juice previous

Good list! I would also like to add two points:
- Be careful with your pagerank and get a good internal link flow (for example, avoid unnecessary footer links to ensure the acquired page rank flows to the important pages in your site as much as possible);
- Avoid internal duplicate content (eg one single blog post returning on several pages: often caused by unnecessary use of tags). By internal duplicate content many pages of your site may end up in the secondary Google index.

Do you think page rank can be generated on a site if it has really good content? or is it just dependent on links?

Thanks for the list. I woould only recommend forum signature links if you are a regular contributor to the site and it would better if the forum is industry related.

Very true, most forums require a minimum amount of posts before they allow you to use a signature as well.

I am glad PR isn’t the only factor now. Prior to the quality factor it was almost impossible to get anywhere with a competitive niche because the top ranking sites would already have millions of incoming links. With the focus on quality and authority you have to be a bit cleverer with how you get your links.

I am blogging from Adelaide, Australia in spite of this English isnt my initial dialect, i am sorry if I fail to make sense. Usually when I view a very strong blog post I go ahead & perform one of three things:1.Send it towards the relevant associates. 2.keep it in several of the best sociable sharing sites. 3.Be sure to return to the exact same site at which I found the blog post.Subsequent to digesting this short article Im truly concidering going ahead & working on all three.

Your pagerank bares no relevance to the return in traffic you get from search engines.

Reply

KnowledgeGuide4U April 16, 2011 at 11:15 pm

I would recommend not to get obsessed with pagerank. In differing with others, Google pagerank is just a irrelevant measure. What really matters is actually getting traffic and conversions. I have a PR4 site with just a few backlinks about 30. All sources are good but it does not have any traffic, why? because it needs authority and authority is not given by page rank.

Hey Clay,
Great list. I have found the most success by simply commenting on good blogs. Even though financial consulting has nothing to do with blogging, I tend to follow and comment on much more blogging websites because I actually learn a ton of information.

In the beginning I read that commenting on blogs was good to do, and that was about the extent of my SEO knowledge. I quickly learned that a great side benefit was that when I would look for sites to comment on, I would read and learn many different techniques to promote and share my services.

In my opinion, making your site trustworthy and reliable, building high quality backlinks are the most efficient way to increase page rank. Build outbound links from your website to authority sites like Wikipedia. Just make sure that you are linking to post that is relevant to your niche/keyword. It tells Google that your are also contributing or supplying more information.

Thank you for writing this list. It has helped give me better perspective on building links. I didn’t realise that building links equated to building reputation and then this helps with rankings in Google. Is link building going to be as effective in the future i wonder. Is link building going to be more or less effective than social proof in the future.

Thanks for any further advice

Hey Steve Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I would guess that social proof becomes very powerful in the future.
I suspect our phones will tell us what everyone else in the store is buying and we can scan a qr code and get recommendations from our friends.
But back to link building, a press release or a link from Mashable or the Wall street Journal in body text will have huge authority for a long time.
As you say social proof may become more important in the future.
If I linked to your new blog with a keyword anchor text, it would provide a bit of a vote of confidence by my site and my reputation as Clay Franklin that it is a worthy destination for whoever searches for the anchor text used on the link.
What are Freemasons
This blurs the distinction between a link and a social proof.
